The Leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), the Honourable Gaston Browne, calls upon the leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr. Baldwin Spencer, to explain the conditions and terms controlling the sale or transfer of Government’s interest in the Cedar Valley Golf Course. A recent news item reports that all of Government’s shares in the golf course, valued at tens of millions of dollars and held for more than fifty years, have been transferred to Bau Panel, the company that has already been given almost 200 acres of government land.
The outgoing administration has been warned that any agreements entered into during this period of April 27 to June 12, 2014—or since the date of the dissolution of Parliament until the day of the general elections—will be reviewed when the new ABLP administration takes office after June 13 2014. The Honourable Gaston Browne has warned those who have entered into agreements with the UPP regime, during the forty-six day period, that those agreements are subject to review following the June 12 2014 general elections.
The Cedar Valley Golf Course has been run by private enterprise, while the significant parcels of land have remained the Government’s. Without any reasonable explanation, the people of Antigua and Barbuda have been told that their valuable land has been transferred to a private company. The ABLP stands opposed to the questionable transfer of land from the people’s shrinking inventory of useful land to privateers. All recent Crown land transfers are viewed with suspicion, since the UPP regime is desperate and may engage in rotten deals as their regime comes to an end.
The ABLP Leader, Honourable Gaston Browne, warns Mr. Spencer and the other members of the UPP regime to cease and desist from making deals in these final 27 days. The UPP regime is a caretaker executive at this point and lacks the authority to enter into valid contracts or agreements during the waning days of its existence. This particular transfer of government’s property in Cedar Valley will be investigated when the ABLP becomes the new government after June 12 2014.
